Spring into Green: Proven Tips to a Weed-Free Lush Lawn this Summer

Spring into Green: Proven Tips to a Weed-Free Lush Lawn this Summer

Creating a lush, green lawn requires careful planning and maintenance. It can be especially tricky if you live in areas with unique climates or soil conditions.

Following is a step-by-step guide to help you achieve a beautiful and weed-free lawn this summer:

1. Clean Up

Begin by cleaning up any debris, such as leaves, branches, and other clutter that may have accumulated over the winter. Rake the lawn to remove dead grass, thatch, and any other organic matter that could prevent healthy growth.

2. Aerate

Aerating your lawn in the spring is crucial for improving soil drainage, reducing compaction, and promoting root growth. You can rent a core aerator or use a spike aerator to perforate the soil.

3. Overseed

If your lawn has thin or bare patches, overseeding is essential for thickening the turf and filling in those areas. Choose a high-quality grass seed blend that is suitable for your climate and soil type. Spread the seed evenly over the lawn and lightly rake it into the soil.

4. Fertilize

Choose a lawn fertilizer and apply according to the manufacturer’s instructions, typically in early spring when the grass is actively growing but before the heat of summer arrives.

Earth Smart Solutions offers a natural Lawn Fertilizer (ESLF) that contains a variety of natural substances for soil and plant improvement.

ESLF can provide quick results along with sustained color. Typically, two applications per season will maintain most lawns at above average condition. If a very high quality lawn is desired, 3 to 4 applications of ESLF may be required. Typically, lawns that are conditioned with ESLF are thicker, greener, and more pest resistant and require less watering than chemically treated lawns.

5. Weed Control

Early spring is the ideal time to tackle weeds before they have a chance to take over your lawn. Consider applying a pre-emergent herbicide to prevent weed seeds from germinating, or spot-treat existing weeds with a post-emergent herbicide.

6. Water

Proper watering is essential for establishing healthy grass roots. Water deeply and infrequently to encourage deep root growth, rather than frequent shallow watering which can lead to weak roots and increased weed growth. Aim for about 1 inch of water per week, including rainfall.

7. Mow

Set your mower blade to the appropriate height for your grass type and never remove more than one-third of the grass height in a single mowing. Regular mowing helps prevent weeds from taking hold and promotes healthy growth.

8. Monitor & Maintain

Keep an eye on your lawn throughout the spring and address any issues promptly. This includes adjusting your watering schedule as needed, applying additional fertilizer if necessary, and continuing to mow regularly.

9. Consult a Professional

If you don’t have time to take care of your lawn, then consult a lawn care professional.

By following these steps and maintaining a consistent lawn care routine throughout the spring, you can set your lawn up for success and enjoy a lush, green, and weed-free lawn by summer.
